The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, in cooperation with Tate Modern, presents a comprehensive solo exhibition celebrating the ground­breaking and influential work of artist and activist Yoko Ono (b. 1933 in Tokyo). Ono is a trailblazer of early conceptual and partici­patory art, film and performance, a celebrated musician, and a formidable campaigner for world peace. Spanning seven decades of the artist’s powerful, multidisciplinary practice from the mid­-1950s to now, YOKO ONO: MUSIC OF THE MIND traces the development of Ono’s innovative work and its enduring impact on contemporary culture. The exhibition in K20 brings together over 200 works including instruction pieces and scores, installations, films, music and photography, revealing a radical approach to language, art and participation that continues to speak to the present moment.

YOKO ONO: MEND PIECE


  
Bangkok Kunsthalle in partnership with A4 Arts Foundation and Proyectoamil presents ‘Mend Piece’ by Yoko Ono. The 1960’s was a time of social change as well as the breaking of artistic conventions. From this wealth of intellectual and radical thought, Ono formed her early artistic practice. Conceived in 1966, ‘Mend Piece’ emerged as an early exploration of participatory art, challenging the very definition of what art can be.

Dear Friends,

Nutopia is a country that exists in all of us. John and I created this imaginary world. We called a press conference and produced a white handkerchief from our pockets and said “This is a flag to Surrender to Peace.” Not Fight for Peace, but “Surrender” to Peace was the important bit. All of us represent Nutopia. Let’s all wave the white flag or handkerchief in our minds and say, ” I love all of me” and have lots of fun. Because we deserve it. Each one of us.

John had said that we were all Ambassadors of Nutopia. And so we are. When you come to our apartment, you’ll see that there is a gold plaque on the kitchen door, that says Nutopian Embassy. John put it there. Strangely enough, now friends just like to come in from that door, and not the front door. It seems the plaque made the kitchen door our front door.

Ambassadors of Nutopia – Think Peace, Act Peace, Spread Peace and let people know to IMAGINE PEACE. Pretty soon, the whole world will realize that we all belong to Nutopia. Together, we will let the other planets know that that’s what’s happening here on our planet – that we are all together, and living life in Peace.

EX-IT AT PALAZZO DELLA RAGIONE, PADUA


Palazzo della Ragione in Padua welcomes Ex It, Yoko Ono’s site-specific installation on peace (until 6 Jan 2025) – one hundred wooden coffins of different sizes with olive trees growing from within as a metaphor for the resilience of life and the vitality of nature.

Yoko: I had the opportunity to visit Padua, Italy. I was taken to an ancient stone palace, built many centuries ago: Palazzo della Ragione, built in 1218. Without giving me any explanation, a man took me up to the second floor. In front of me now opened a huge space, similar to a ballroom. Suddenly, in my vision, I saw many people lined up in a row in the room. What was going on? At that moment, the person who had brought me there explained to me that that was a room where executions were carried out. It was not a ballroom. I saw many, many coffins of men, women and children filling the room. Eventually, trees sprouted from each of the coffins. The trees became a forest. Birds sang all around … and I began to cry. That’s how this work was born. It is the memory of every race, every country. It is the memory of genocide: the pain, the horror and the salvation. The dead wanted us to remember, I think. Our tears will help heal the memory.


 

WISH TREE FOR YOKO ONO

To celebrate Yoko Ono’s birthday on 18 February, Sean Ono Lennon made a virtual ‘Wish Tree’ for people all over the world to post their wishes online and (in association with One Tree Planted) plant real trees in Yoko’s honor.

We hope to gather as many wishes and plant as many trees as possible to honor this incredible woman.

Sean Ono Lennon says: “My mother is a real life tree hugger. If we ever walk past a tree of any significance she inevitably stops and hugs the tree with incredible enthusiasm. Since 9 is a very special number in her Universe, I thought we should do something special for her 90th birthday. So I made a virtual Wish Tree, like the Wish Trees she often makes for museums and galleries. I wanted to give the whole world an opportunity to make a wish for her, and plant a tree in her honor. Make a wish. Plant a tree. Wish Yoko a happy birthday. It’s that simple.”
